The electric industry in the District of Columbia has been restructured and retail electric choice has been available to all District of Columbia electric customers since January 1, 2002. Electric restructuring or retail choice means that of the three components of electricity (generation, transmission and distribution), customers are able to shop for an alternate supplier to provide generation or the electricity itself. Transmission (the wires that carry electricity from the power plant to your neighborhood) and distribution (the wires that carry electricity to your homes and businesses) will continue to be regulated on the federal level by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and on the local level by the District of Columbia Public Service Commission. PEPCO will continue to provide transmission and distribution on the local level. Under the District of Columbia restructuring law, PEPCO will continue to provide generation or electricity until February 2005 at which time PEPCO will exit the generation business.
The following tables shows residential and non-residential customers who participate in retail choice program, the number of alternate or competitive service providers in the District of Columbia, and the electricity rates offered by the competitive service providers. |
